The Company

SymlConnect Limited (‘Syml’ or the ‘Company’) is a user-led informatics company, engaging intimately with specialist healthcare professionals to create smart, secure, fully integrated software solutions for better patient-clinician communication. Creating a unified environment for health data is a key priority for healthcare providers worldwide, thereby advancing the need to refine methods of collecting, delivering and exchanging personal health data, to facilitate the development, deployment, testing and evaluation of novel digital health innovations.

Whilst the UK NHS is struggling to meet the increased elderly care and chronic condition monitoring demands with the ever-strained resources and budget shortfalls, published NHS reports highlight severe wastage of crucial professional time. Clinical time is often spent on administrative work for the patient instead of concentrating on preventative care offering due to the manual processes, still inherent in data collection and data sharing. Such processes instigate human errors causing expensive delays detrimental to care giving.

The Syml aims are aligned with the five-year NHS plan for a digital revolution with the goals of a paper-less NHS and empowerment of patients. Syml went a step forward by digitising the full clinical protocols reflecting the individual care pathways that are followed for the different chronic condition monitoring, at-risk assessments, general monitoring or essential data gathering. The solutions are, therefore, custom made according to the clinical needs, thereby offering minimum learning and achieving immediate efficiency gain. Lasting improvements, both in resource costs and clinical time giving, for the right person for the right reason at the right time accomplished without compromising health and care resources that are already stretched to their limits.

The value-add does not restrict itself to time and cost savings, but prudent healthcare facilitation, improving patient satisfaction rate, identifying priority care needs even from previously untapped data and achieving clinical targets effectively.

Conceived by three professionals with discrete backgrounds in clinical expertise, information technology and management of multidisciplinary teams, SymlConnect has been established to overcome the primary challenges barring seamless and secure health information and technical interoperability. The aim was born out of the widely recognised needs of bridging the patient-clinician communication gap, bringing better efficiency to continued long-term chronic condition monitoring and to engage patients for a better understanding of their own conditions. Syml has won prestigious awards even at its preliminary stages, with funded health-tech challenge projects.

The inception of SymlConnect in 2012, was with the vision of creating simple, yet intelligent solutions utilising modern available communication technology for a disruptive, enriched care ‘giving & receiving’ experience. The cohesive solutions are to deliver precise needs and preferences of the ‘users’, coordinating their individual clinical care pathways. Embracing the connected care concept Syml exploited the mobile device usage, which has taken over many aspects of our lives during the past decade and especially during the pandemic in 2020.

Syml's core offering is an interoperable modular software framework. It is a standards-based data push and pull ‘switchboard’ concept that facilitates seamless secured sharing of data anytime, anywhere; an essential uniqueness for the seamless automated updating of patient record in a secure and clinically coded manner.

Additionally, an interactive reporting with data visualization module is depleted for speedy analysis of R-A-G (Red/Amber/Green) threshold alerts, flagging up significant responses to prompt essential timely action. Clinical time is therefore channelled to clinical needs thus realising the efficiency gain.

Within the NHS landscape, there are over 15 million people living in the UK with long term conditions, each requiring regular monitoring. Exacerbated by the ever-expanding elderly population demands and the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, we delivered time-critical innovative remote operational solutions capable of maintaining continuity of care within the primary and community care markets. Initial implementation was focussed on reducing environmental footfall with an interactive technology driven solution. The first product is launched with EMIS Health, UK’s leading GP system provider, with Syml as one of its first elite partners. The product benefits professionals and patients, each using the system in their own unique way for prudent outcomes with increased healthcare communication.

The award-winning achievements of Syml places the company in good stead, utilising digital technology as an enabler. The year 2018 culminated in Syml achieving the MediWales Innovation Industry Award, ‘Partnership with the NHS’ category, for digitisation of ‘All Wales Maternity Record’- a Bevan Exemplar project, and recently Syml was the acclaimed winner of 2022 EMIS Partner Award, in the ‘Empowering Patients’ category.

Working Ethos

Syml takes pride in our ability to work in full collaboration with the clinical and patient user groups to ensure co-creation of intuitive front ends and relevant care pathways. Syml’s unique user-centric approach offered the privilege of partnering with some of the most skilful recognised specialists and academics in Wales, each sharing a common vision of enhancing the efficiency of care-giving and receiving, utilising the modern, intelligent communications technologies. The challenging ambition was to offer customised solutions for easy user experience. This was achieved by dedicating the time required to fully understand individual protocols and reflecting the care pathways in a simplified and perceptive manner, ensuring familiar interfaces and process flows are maintained. The need of a minimum learning curve overcomes the widely recognised barrier of ‘new system learning’ to technology adoption.

Established within the Swansea Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), our software development efforts were bolstered by recognition from academic and clinical partners, ‘research and development’ awards and equity investments. Coupled with the goal of making inroads into secondary and other parallel care delivery markets the secured data collection, data transfer and data visualisation modules are readily customisable for any relevant organisational needs. SymlConnect has wide-reaching industry ambitions, backed by a hands-on dynamic team with over 35 years of joint experience in all aspects of clinical information technology, product development, mobile technical expertise, standards and governance. Ongoing collaboration with other companies, academic institutions and NHS organisations is a conscious decision made for mutual growth, innovation and stability.

Following a track record of award-winning achievements, SymlConnect is now an accredited Elite EMIS Health partner and is currently expanding its range of support for other major clinical system platforms like VISION and SystmOne.

Syml specialises in the development of digital remote monitoring and interactive assessment software solutions, based on our customisable modular framework, recent projects include independent remote pharma solutions and anonymised data survey projects. Syml looks forward to an escalated growth with its current partners and locating future opportunities, both within Britain and internationally. We welcome creative minds and proactive organisations to connect with us to explore prospective projects.
